Are kudzu bugs driving you crazy? These nuisance pests are quickly becoming a frustration to homeowners across NC, including Greensboro and Winston-Salem. If kudzu bugs are aggregating on the exterior of your home or have found their way inside, it’s time to call the pest control pros at McNeely.
What are kudzu bugs?
Also called the bean plataspid, lablab bug or globular stink bug, kudzu bugs are native to Asia and were first discovered in the U.S. in 2009. Since the first confirmed report of kudzu bugs in GA, these pests have quickly spread to AL, SC, NC and VA and are increasingly being found on homes in Greensboro and Winston-Salem.
As their name suggests, these flying insects prefer to feed on kudzu, however, they have been known to eat soybean plants and other vegetation as well. Kudzu bugs are light brown to olive green in color and their bulbous bodies are covered in numerous dark brown speckles. Adults range from 4 to 6 mm in length and, like stink bugs, produce an offensive odor if handled or disturbed. A single female kudzu bug can lay up to 200 eggs in one to two months plus complete two complete generations per year!
Like ladybugs and stink bugs, kudzu bugs seek shelter in the winter. As the weather turns colder, you may see hordes of these pests aggregating on or near your house. Other common areas for kudzu bugs to overwinter include kudzu patches, plant debris, underneath tree bark and in other protected places.
